Kansas receives third straight Silver Shovel Award from Area Development magazine
Award is Kansas’ third in six weeks from a major business publication

Kansas named a top 10 state in Site Selection magazine’s Competitiveness Awards
Site Selection magazine has named Kansas one of the nation’s 10 most competitive states for capital investment and new facility development, officials announced today.
The rankings were part of Site Selection’s annual Competitiveness Awards, which recognize the states that score the most points on the magazine’s 10-category index of new facility construction. GE Aviation selects Kansas State for new University Development Center

Manhattan, Kansas Site Selected as Finalist for National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility
The Kansas Bioscience Authority announced today that Manhattan, Kansas has been selected as one of five finalists for the $450 million National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. This decision comes after months of intensive review by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security of 17 locations in 12 states around the country.

Phase Out of Kansas Franchise Tax
The 2007 Kansas Legislature approved another new initiative this year to reduce the cost of doing business in this state. They passed a new law to phase out the franchise tax in Kansas over five years. The tax would be repealed altogether effective in tax year 2011.

Reduction of Unemployment Insurance Rates
Kansas made some significant reductions in 2007 to unemployment insurance rates for existing and new employers in Kansas. Existing employers who are current on their account, will see a reduction of 40% to 100% of their tax rate, depending on their rate category. New employers to Kansas will also enjoy a drop in their tax rate as the new rate for all employers, except the construction industry, is now 4%. Employers in the construction industry will pay 6%.
